Chimpanzee in space5/16/2023 ![]() He felt it could become a major tourist attraction. One of the more bizarre suggestions came from a politician who proposed a race track for the strays on the lines of greyhound racing. After all they have to be street smart to survive in Bangkok's traffic.īangkok strays have been a problem for years and there have been assorted wonderful proposals to solve the problem of wandering woofers. I hasten to add that I'm not suggesting Thai dogs be blasted into space, but we should appreciate that Thai strays might be more useful than we imagine. Maybe Thailand can learn from the Soviet experience. ![]() The Soviets chose street dogs for space experiments because they reckoned they were stronger than domestic hounds. She initially survived, but died shortly after following a brain operation. Thankfully they didn't try elephants - that would have been bit of a squeeze.įor the curious, the first cat in space was a French feline called Felicitte which did a quick orbit in Oct 1963. They include mice, rats, monkeys, rabbits, tortoises, cats, squirrels, birds, frogs and even stick insects. Since the original dog flights, all sorts of unfortunate creatures have whizzed around in space, not all of them living to tell the tale. Laika's name lives on in books poems and films, but you cannot escape that it's a truly melancholy tale. "We shouldn't have done it." The Russians eventually erected a statue of Laika in Star City. "The more time passes, the more I am sorry about it," he said. Years later a Soviet scientist involved in the Laika mission expressed remorse. If you choose to read more about Laika, I suggest you have a handkerchief on standby. In Britain the public were furious at this disregard for the dog's life and held a minute's silence to pay their respects. The USSR was so consumed with the "Space Race" they cut corners and did not have the technology to get the module or the dog back to Earth safely. Sadly, Laika was on a one-way ticket and perished in space. A Moscow street dog, Laika was dubbed "Muttnik" in the US. It would be remiss not to mention Laika (Barker in English), which became the first dog in space back in 1957, aboard the Soviet Union's Sputnik 2. Just imagine the poor bugger hurtling around up there not having a clue what was happening. If you can spare a moment today, it might be appropriate to give a little toast to our chimpanzee friend who was a true space warrior. He was buried at the International Space Hall of Fame in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Originally captured in the Cameroon jungle, after his mission Ham spent 17 years in American zoos before his death in 1983. ![]() When the capsule opened up after splashdown the chimp reportedly emerged "burping proudly". Honouring HamĪccording to Life photographer Ralph Morse, Ham "was a very friendly fellow". Only a couple of months later Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth, swiftly followed by America's Alan Shephard. The risks involved were reflected in the banner headline of the San Francisco Examiner which proclaimed with some relief, "SPACE CHIMP LIVES!" The mission created considerable excitement in the US and Ham made the cover of Life magazine on Feb 10, 1961, looking cute in his Nasa helmet. ![]() The mission was hugely important because the chimp successfully pulled a couple of levers in flight, proving astronauts could perform tasks while in space. Thankfully Ham survived his 16min 39sec flight, splashing down in the Atlantic with little more than a bruised nose to become the first hominid in space. The reasoning was that the public would become upset if an animal with a name died in space, but would be less emotional about a number expiring. Nasa officially called the chimp "No.65" and only recognised it as Ham after the successful completion of the mission. However, to his handlers he was Chop Chop Chang. The chimp in question was called Ham - not because he was partial to a certain sandwich, but rather an acronym for Holloman Aerospace Medical Center in New Mexico. Today marks the 60th anniversary of the first chimpanzee in space.

As a protection from marauders, he had the safest place in the kingdom. Taksin made this area his royal court, building his palace directly next to Wichaiprasit Fort, with Wat Arun as his immediate neighbour on the other side. Yai next to Wat Molilokkayaram, and the waterway passing behind Wat Arun, running parallel to the river until it reached Klong Bangkok Noi, at Wat Amarin. Clearly, Money Town had been essentially for officialdom and the military, while the community that depended upon it had lived largely outside the walls, on the river and alongside the canals, for this was the era when ordinary folk dwelled upon the water rather than on the usually marshy land. With the fort at its southeast corner, a rectangle of fortifications spreads back almost as far as Klong Bangkok Noi, and outside of this rectangle the land is marked as being agricultural. King Narai’s Wichaiprasit Fort, built in the 1660s and expanded by the French under the naval officer Chevalier de Forbin, sits formidably at the mouth of Klong Bangkok Yai, a watchful presence for ships heading upriver to Ayutthaya. According to the text, Judas is the only one of Jesus's disciples who accurately understands the words of his master. The Gospel of Judas consists of 16 chapters which document Jesus's teaching about spiritual matters and cosmology. Cited in support of this dating is the reference to a "Gospel of Judas" by the early Christian writer Irenaeus of Lyons, who, in arguing against Gnosticism, described the text as "fictitious history" and "blasphemous" heresies." However, it is uncertain whether the text mentioned by Irenaeus is in fact the same text as the Coptic "Gospel of Judas" found in the Codex Tchacos. It has also been speculated, on the basis of textual analysis concerning features of dialect and Greek loan words, that the Coptic text contained in the codex may be a translation from an older Greek manuscript dating, at the earliest, to c. The codex had been stored in a cardboard box for two decades as it was shopped around to potential buyers, and had, at various points, been stored in a freezer, a safety deposit box in Long Island, and folded in half. Individual leaves may have been removed and sold. According to Coptic scholar Rodolphe Kasser, the codex originally contained 31 leaves, each written on both sides by the time the codex came to the market in 1999, only 13 leaves survived. ![]() Some passages are only scattered words others contain many lines. Numerous sections are missing as a result of poor handling and storage. The manuscript disintegrated into over a thousand pieces. The manuscript was radiocarbon dated and described by the National Geographic as showing a likely date between 220–340 AD. The codex contains text that appears to be from the late 2nd century and includes the first known surviving copy of the self-titled "Gospel of Judas" ( Euangelion Ioudas), which relates the story of Jesus's death from the viewpoint of Judas. and showed some of the papyrus pages for the first time." In contrast to the canonical gospels, which paint Judas as a betrayer who delivered Jesus to the authorities for crucifixion in exchange for money, the Gospel of Judas portrays Judas's actions as done in obedience to instructions given to him by Jesus. It has been suggested that the text derives from an earlier manuscript in the Greek language An English translation was first published in early 2006 by the National Geographic Society. The only copy of it known to exist is a Coptic language text that has been carbon dated to 280 AD, plus or minus 60 years. Given that it includes late 2nd-century theology, it is widely thought to have been composed in the 2nd century (prior to 180 AD) by Gnostic Christians, rather than the historic Judas himself. The content consists of conversations between Jesus and Judas Iscariot. The Gospel of Judas is a non-canonical Gnostic gospel.
